The Killer Bee is made with Plymouth Navy Strength Gin, freshly squeezed lemon juice, homemade cranberry honey sherbet and a drop of Peychaud bitters. Dinner and a movie, is an acquired taste. Over-proofed rum infused with butter and popcorn. Balanced with homemade Coca Cola syrup, Chardonnay white wine and a splash of freshly squeezed lime juice. If you would like to learn how to make some of these marvelous drinks, ask about the creative drinks and mixology workshops. You and a group of friends can book cocktail lessons. On arrival, you will be greeted with a cocktail which you can drink while listening to a short history about creating cocktails. At 5&amp;33 they have a nice assortment of cocktails for your enjoyment. Whether before or after your dinner drinks or just drinks, there is something here for everyone. The menu is inclusive of about 30 or more wondrously splendid and timeless cocktails in addition to your normal beverages. Prices of the drinks are just as high classed as the bar and its clientele. Gin and Tonic drinks include the Sexy Monkey, mixed with Monkey 47 Gin, Fentimans Tonic, Cloves, Kaffir Lime Leaves. Delicious! You might also try the French Affair created with G Vine Floriason, Fever Tree Tonic, Raspberries, Grapes or the Spanish Secrets prepared with Gin Mare, 1724 Tonic, Thai Basil, Rosemary. All priced about €16. 5&amp;33 has a vast array of House cocktails that range in price from 12 to €16. The names alone make you want to try them. Drinks like the Horny Mule has a little kick, made with Ketel One Vodka, wild berries, cherry liqueur and ginger beer. You have to try the Holy Viagra, which is made with El Jimador tequila, King’s ginger, homemade spiced honey, fresh ginger, lemongrass, chili and carrot juice. Now that’s sure to get your motor running. The Lady Lover mixed with Tanqueray, Clement Liquor, Lillet Rose, homemade Jasmin syrup and green tea is sure to please. This place will whisk you back to the future with its roaring 20’s feel. Whether the wooden décor, bar seating, and tall tables downstairs or the sofas and comfy chairs upstairs, Hiding in Plain Sight is filled with charm and character. It’s located near Oosterdok and open ‘til 3AM on the weekends. Great for hanging out late with friends after dinner or if you’re on a date. The aromas coming out of this place will have you following your nose all the way to the bar where you’ll find, what looks like, an alcohol laboratory. Loads of spirits, homemade syrups, herbs and other ingredients in jars and shakers line the bar. You’ll want to get there early or call ahead and make a reservation because it gets a little busy on the weekend. House rule, you have to have a seat to be served. Once seated you’re offered water, complimentary olives and nuts to go with your cocktail. If you’re in search of a trendy, stylish crowd, this is the place you want to go for cocktails! The staff makes you feel like they have known you for ages which can have a down side once you get your tab. The drinks can be a bit pricey but they are worth every penny. You can order from the menu or one of their talented bartenders can make you their own creation or create something just for you. You can have something as simple as a Whisky Sour or as crazy as a Walking Dead which, incidentally, is served in a skull glass mug with a grapefruit on top. The grapefruit is sprayed with a flammable powder that is lit right at your table. Drinking doesn’t get any better than this!

Hiding in Plain Sight

A trendy bar located in the city center is sister to Vesper and Bar 22 and shares an entrance with the Supperclub. The bar is set up like an intimate lounge separated into two areas. One side setup with an ample amount of tables, has sight lines to the bar. The other side, setup like an elegant living room, has discreet areas for more tranquil, intimate conversation. Uniquely sculpture bar stools match the trendiness of the club. They are a conversation starter on their own. The bar is named after the 21st chapter of the book, A Clockwork Orange. References to the novel are everywhere including the stuffed flamingos that you will see all around the bar. Some of the cocktails refer to the book as well. Catering to a younger, more eccentric clientele, Chapter 21 delivers on style and has a unique quality about it. Chapter 21 is more of a club than a bar. Live music and a disco ball sets the tone for a great party atmosphere. If you book a reservation before midnight you can get a great table that comes with a few perks but it is a little pricey. Reservations include two 0.7 liter bottles (premium) Spirits, 20 sodas and free entrance. The tables are for 6 to 10 people and the price ranges from €400 to €500. If crowds are not your thing, this is not the place for you. If you don’t mind the crowd, put on your dancing shoes, put your hands in the air and dance the night away. Chapter 21 is open four nights a week for your dancing and drinking pleasure!

The restaurant serves Indonesian cuisine specialty dishes and has some of the best cocktails for your indulgence. You will love their Java Mule made with their own vodka infused with lemongrass and sugar cane. Hugo Bar and Kitchen is a neighborhood bar located in West Amsterdam. As “new kid on the block,” it has earned notability as the “Best in the Netherlands.” Hugo is a nice, quaint Bar and Kitchen that would be perfect for romantic dinner and cocktails. If the weather permits, cocktails on the terrace is a must. However, If you prefer being inside, you might consider making a reservation as Hugo’s only has seating available for fifty. From the sign bearing the name to the open floor plan, you’ll enjoy Hugo’s simple elegance and sleek décor which is simply a work of art. Speaking of works of art, how about a cocktail served in a glass shaped like a boot or a bin, yes a bin! You can also order drinks like Gin and Tonic by the pitcher. The bar features twenty eight different types of gin. The “Bucket List” portion of the menu is made for sharing. Drinks from this portion of the menu come in one and two liters. If specialty drinks are your thing, you might try the Gold Digger, the 21st Century Cocktail, the Threesome or Hugo the Great all crafted by Hugo’s talented bar staff. Hugo opened in the fall of 2014 but has quickly gotten a reputation of being the place to go on Sundays. That’s when you can get the “all you can eat” oysters for €1 each. If sipping great cocktails in large plush chairs in front of the fireplace, picturesque interior, French paintings on the wall, knotty pine floors, slender wooden tables and sleek elegant décor sound like something you would like, then Lion Noir is where you’ll want to be. This impressive bar is owned and hosted by Serge Rijn along with co-owners Casper Reinders, who owns Jimmy Woo and Mr. Yen, who owns Bo cinq and Dynasty. Thijs Murré, a great designer, said to get his inspiration from cultures, fashion, film, art, and photography that creates and innovatives, along with Reinders and Rijndesigned designed the interior of this gorgeous bar. Thus, this stunning interior is a great place to have a nice meal and exceptional cocktails. Lion Noir, which means “black lion” in French, lives up to its name, strong, vibrant and king of the cocktail jungle. Some fabulous drinks you might want to try would be the Porn Star Martini or the Lion Nicer. The ground floor has an inviting bar and lounge and the restaurant is on the first floor. Throughout the summer months you can bathe in the sun out on the terrace and in the winter months, you might want to find a seat in front of the roaring fireplace. The eloquent décor is only rivaled by Lion Noirs excellent service. Cocktails are moderately priced and you will find your classic cocktails here as well as a specialty cocktails. Whatever your reason for visiting, dinner in the garden in summer or cocktails by the fireplace in winter, you can be certain you will get excellent service, great food and drinks in a beautiful place.

Like the emblem carved in the door, Door 74 is a unique find. Door 74 recreates the speakeasy look and feel. You’ll love the tin ceiling and sleek bar design. This dimly lit cocktail bar has a sophisticated atmosphere that you’re sure to enjoy. Though you no longer have to whisper about where you’re going to drink, you do need to phone ahead for reservations and to find out where the bar with the nondescript door is located. You definitely want to secure a reservation since you won’t get in without one. The good news is that the bar stays open until 4AM on the weekends for some great late night fun. If you want to experience this wonderful bar before eight at night, when it officially opens for business, you might consider taking part in one of their many workshops. During the workshops you will learn about the history of cocktails and bar techniques. This is a really great experience. You can even have your own special drink made. They do have some non-alcoholic beverages, but who goes to a bar to NOT drink alcohol? If you are able to get a reservation, once inside, you’ll be seated and offered water and snacks to go with your cocktail. Like at the workshops, you can drink one of the tasty drinks listed on the menu or be adventurous and have your own special concoction made! You will never forget this experience. Though Door 74 is a “speakeasy,” you’ll want to scream loudly about this place for a long, long time!

This Kitchen and Bar is an absolutely gorgeous bar located in the center or Rembrandt! The ambiance seems to whisk you away. Cocktails are moderately priced and include such drinks as the Smoking An-a-na-nas made from Mezcal, honey pineapple pepper syrup, pineapple juice, and lime juice. This one is sure to turn up the heat. You may care to try the Murcielago &amp; Cojon prepared with Bacardi Gold, Mandarin Napoleon, lime juice and Fever Tree ginger beer. The Ivory lady devised from Bombay Sapphire, Cointreau, mango syrup, lime juice is also a winner. If Mystique was in the states, it would be the equivalent of a fancy sports bar. The huge flat screen plays sports events to keep you entertained and drinking! The food and drinks at the Mystique have made visitors think about moving to Amsterdam. Sparerib Wednesday gets a lot of credit for that. All in all the service is not shabby either. It is a great blend of cognac and sugar arise in Champagne. The Sparkling Star is said to create their own special occasion with an energy that takes you with them! NJOY also offers spirit tastings and workshops. This would be great when you just want to get away with a few friends and further develop your pallet. The Rotisserie Amsterdam is part pub and part cocktail bar. The Rotisserie is a “Brooklynese” bar located in boogie down Amsterdam-West. This quaint neighborhood restaurant with exposed brick and subway tiled walls will welcome you with open arms. Rotisserie is a casual bar and restaurant where you can come in and catch a quick bite or slide in the back door and stay a while to enjoy some great tasting cocktails. In the back door you’ll find an extensive menu of superb food and great gins. There you will find their Mad Mixologist who will be delighted to blend you one of the finest cocktails you have ever tasted. They carry a wide variety of cocktails that will delight even the pickiest drinker. On the menu you will find a lineup of tempting and tantalizing cocktails to choose from. If you have ever tried an Arnold Palmer you will fall in love with The Golden Kettle. This drink is a combination of Ketel One vodka infused with Earl Grey tea, fresh Lime Juice, Orgeat Syrup and a dash of Angostura Bitters, and lemonade. The Scottish Monks Mule is a masterpiece with a mixture of Hendricks gin fused with Brother Frangelico, fresh cucumber and Ginger Beer. The Kyoto Swizzle is a swizzle with an Asian twist. Junmai Sake, Kiwi Liqueur, fresh lime and fresh passion fruit make this a drink you will remember, well, if you don’t have too many of them. So, what’s the big secret? A question you might ask when you come upon this hidden gem. With a sideways cow painted across the huge glass window at the entrance, your first impression might lead you to believe you’ve come upon a butcher shop. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Once inside you’ll find out that The Butcher’s Secret is a slick burger restaurant, but that’s hardly the secret! Located in Holland’s most famous market, the Albert Cuypstraat is where you’ll find this place. Unless you’re only interested in burgers, you’ll need to phone ahead for a reservation. This is the only way you’ll learn the secret of this speakeasy. Once you have a reservation, you will be emailed the secret password that will allow you to gain entrance to one of the greatest bars in Amsterdam. Upon arrival, let one of the staff know that you have a reservation. At that time, you will be inconspicuously taken back to the secret door. After you press the buzzer, someone will ask you for your name and the secret password. If you give the correct information, then and only then will you be allowed access. This beautiful place caters to the Classy, metro professional of all ages. Dress is business casual, no jeans allowed. This very stylish and somewhat pricey bar has an impressive décor of rich wooden tables, bordered by velvet couches and leather upholstered Chesterfields. Dim lighting and intimate seating complete a cozy sophistication that is to be rivaled. The music plays at a moderate level so that you can enjoy it but yet be able to hold conversation. Christian, the Head bartender, is extremely knowledgeable and the best at what he does. This is why, though a well hidden secret, The Butcher’s Secret is said to be one of the best cocktail bars in Amsterdam. Quiet, it’s a secret!

The Butcher's Secret Cocktail Bar

This place is simply remarkable. A restaurant that serves Thai food and great cocktails, located in Amsterdam West, is a great place to meet the locals. In fact it is a very popular place among the neighborhood people. This can mainly be contributed to the friendly staff and the stylish interior with ceilings that seem to scrape the sky. This two story restaurant and bar is sophisticatedly decorated with large windows all around to allow in the sunny outdoors. Decorative walls with exposed brick and huge lamps made of glass and shaped like balls set the tone for a lovely time. The furniture is posh. A delicate arrangement of plush velvet comfortable seating downstairs and modestly covered chairs in the upper level dining area. The bar is bold in a colorful shade of pink, surrounded by round leather bound stools. The light fixtures hanging over the bar have an eclectic flair that will draw your eye to the bar area. When the weather is nice, you can dine or have drinks on the terrace which is quite exquisite. Early afternoon and evening you will get the full effect of the sun. With such an opulent interior, the Golden Brown Bar doesn’t fit your normal description of a brown bar, however, this chic hotspot does offer some wonderful beers on draught. This fashionable, yet casual place is perfect for before dinner drinks! Though the bar may look expensive, the food and drinks are reasonably priced. You’re sure to have a great experience without breaking the bank.

Golden Brown Bar

In March of 2013 the gods blessed us with this new hotspot, a little gem of a bar located between Oud-Zuid outside of Vondelpark. The owners Leonardo Belloni and Daan Bonsen know cocktail bars as they are also the owners of Vesper Bar, Hugo’s, Bar22 and Chapter 21, all great places to either drink, dine or both. The phrase “Little Gem,” describes this place perfectly. This quaint little bar and kitchen only seats about seventy-five people in total but it is a huge, rare find. The multilevel bar offers intimate reserved dining on one level and the bar and more seating for walk-ins on the other. Franklin Bar and Kitchen’s décor is filled with vintage designed furniture and stylish lighting that draws you in. You will be quite impressed with the atmosphere, the excellent service and the strong drinks. The bar gets a little crowded around cocktail hour. This is the time when the yuppies and neighborhood locals come in to enjoy the Franklin Bar ambiance. For a little extra space, if the weather permits you will enjoy sitting on the terrace. Though small in size, it is a great spot for meeting up with friends and sharing a moderately priced cocktail. Franklin’s Favorites are menu items carefully chosen by bartenders. They include; the Spanish &amp; Tonic, this cocktail is made with Tanqueray Gin, homemade cucumber puree, lemon juice, and tonic. It is an inspiring twist on the gin and tonic, Mint Julep , made with Bulleit Bourbon, sugar syrup, mint leaves, and angostura bitters, The Pornstar Martini, mixed with Ketel One vodka, Passion Fruit Puree, and Vanilla Syrup. Try any one or all of them. They just might become your favorite as well.
