With her family and a small group of Jews Anne Frank hid in the attic of this house for two years while the Nazi invaders arrested and deported Amsterdam’s Jewish population. Eventually Anne and her fellow occupants were discovered and murdered. Today, the rooms themselves are also surprisingly personal and intimate since so many of the everyday objects that lay around the occupants on that terrible morning when the occupants were discovered are still there. Nearby is the Westerkerk. The West Church, as its known in English, was completed in 1631 and like almost all of Amsterdam's churches it's Protestant. The tower of this church is 85 metres high and if you climb it you'll get some great views of the city. The great painter Rembrandt is buried here but amazingly no one seems to know where.

During the war, just as the Nazis had forced Jews to wear yellow stars on their clothes, homosexuals were made to wear pink ones in the concentration camps and this is what the stone triangles of the Homomonument commemorate.

It used to be Amsterdam's equivalent of Fleet Street in London, where all the national Dutch press was based. The street has some fine examples of traditional Amsterdam merchants’ houses. The character of the city centre is largely determined by its 17th and 18th century houses - like the ones you can see here.

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal

The museum is actually much bigger than it looks from the outside. It’s really is a multimedia experience which brings to life the Amsterdam’s long history with artefacts ranging from clothing to a fifteenth century map of the city. There are archaeological finds and paintings by masters such as Rembrandt and Jacob van Ruisdael who painted wonderfully serene landscapes.

History Museum

The order of the Begijns was founded in around 1150 as a refuge for women from well to do families who were either widows or spinsters. The last Begijn, Sister Antonia died in 1971 aged 83, but this area still offers housing for unmarried women and the authorities ask for: "Respect, silence, and privacy."

The main flower you’ll see here is the tulip. The tulip is the most famous Dutch flower, of course. The word 'tulip' is actually Turkish. This is because the flowers came originally from Persia and it was the Ottoman Turks who cultivated them during the early seventeenth century and then introduced them to Western Europe.
